Alberta has an established history of private liquor sales and is thought to be best positioned of all provinces to find the balances between private interest and public responsibility in cannabis distribution and retail.
The province’s private sector is also thought to have an advantage over other provinces because the business structure already exists to facilitate private sales of a highly regulated product. It was also the first province to have fully articulated its retail, online, and distribution plans.
Alberta will have privately run retail outlets and a government operated online sales. Retailers will purchase product directly from the government run Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC). The AGLC will govern all licenced distributors.
