And then there’s Ontario…
In June of 2018 Ontario elected a new government that chose to eliminate the cannabis retail and online sales strategy of the previous government. Where Ontario look as if it would have the most draconian retailing laws in the country, the province has now opened the retail market up to private interests. It will continue to control online sales. Both will be regulated by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO).
Because of this sudden reversal of plans, legal retail sales of cannabis will not be allowed until April 1, 2019 at the earliest. In the meantime, Ontarians will be able to legally purchase cannabis online from the Ontario Cannabis Store.
The province has not issued firm guidance on what rules and regulations will govern cannabis sales, promotion, advertising, and messaging in the province.
